Sitting upon land originally inhabited by the Lenape people, Stonehaven’s story begins in the 1890s when the Kunkeli family first acquired a sweeping expanse of land along the Delaware River in Sullivan County, New York. Decades later, in the 1930s, Eugenie Kunkeli (grandchild to the original owners), and her husband, Richard Morrill of New York City, felt called to create a retreat that simultaneously honored the rugged and majestic landscape of the space as well as their own artistic sensibilities.
Using stone quarried directly from the mountainside, Eugenie and Richard built a Tudor-style home whose craftsmanship still inspires awe. Its slate roof, grand proportions, and deep connection to the land speak to a time when homes were built with intention and artistry: Keen eyes will spot whimsical carvings hidden in the masonry by the original craftsmen, including a musical staff and a variety of local wildlife.
For the past 30 years, Stonehaven has been privately owned by a family that has served as the meticulous stewards of this extraordinary place. Like the owners before them, they were drawn here by the river’s steady presence, the sheltering mountains, and the abundant wildlife that thrives in between. Their commitment to preservation is matched only by their passion for music and the arts. Today, they open Stonehaven’s doors to all who seek inspiration and connection.
